In June 1944 Congress passed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, more commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights This act was created to ease transition of military personnel from wartime to peace following World War II. It provided many benefits for veterans such as low-interest mortgages, business loans, unemployment benefits, and educational opportunities. The U.S. government would pay for veterans’ tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for up to four years of college. The GI Bill led to a boom in higher education. It also established veterans’ hospitals throughout the country. The legislation accelerated a postwar boom in demand for goods and services. Congress passed similar programs in 1952 for veterans of the Korean War and in 1966 for veterans of the Vietnam War. Non-combat military veterans also received benefits.
